Heya deviants! I hope you guys had a happy holiday and a great start to 2013.
Now for a little random thought.
Whenever I'm bored, I'll surf around YouTube or doodle for a bit. Well one day, I happened to bump into something I haven't seen in YEARS: a cartoon show from Nickelodeon called "Catscratch". Whenever I saw that thumbnail, I though to myself "I haven't seen this in years! Let's watch it!" So I sat down to the episode called "Bringing Down the Mouse" and I gotta say: this show's a lot better than I remember.
The premise is that three cats inherit a fortune after their multimillionaire owner passes on (similar to "The Aristocats"). They have these very surreal adventures that range from fighting krakens in order to receive a wish to competing for the title of "King of Root Beer" to one of the cats growing a second head that talks like Bing Crosby.
Looking back on it, I remember enjoying the show's silliness from way back when. Now a days, I think this show still holds up well. It's definitely a weird show with weird circumstances, but if you enjoy that sort of thing, then this show's for you. I enjoy the out-of-the-box creativity of some of these episodes in just how odd they are. The designs on the main characters are also creative and the animation is just as fun. Considering this came from the creator of "Earthworm Jim", it's not that surprising.
What really won me over were the main characters. They're all cats and they're brothers that are starkly different in character and design and they have this unique chemistry. It's fun to see them interact with one another. To start, there's a Scottish manx named Gordon (voiced by Rob Paulsen) who is a loyal companion and fighter of all monsters from magic krakens to evil baby ducks. He also has this certain infatuation with his human neighbor Kimberly (which is a little weird but nothing compared to some of the other stuff in here). Then there's the black cat Mr. Blik (voiced by Wayne Knight), the narcissistic, sarcastic, and self-proclaimed leader with a super-sized ego. Finally my personal favorite is Waffle (voiced by Kevin McDonald). He's a grey cat that's one too bright but has random bursts of intelligence, a love of newts, and the best one liners in the whole show. (The line that won me over was when they were on the moon looking for rocks to use for barbecuing ribs. Mr. Blik points to something and Waffle is in awe by what he sees: "A finger!!" )
What gets me is that it lasted only 20 episodes... why? This was a fun, creative show! On top of that, it's funny! Why boot it off? It baffles me. I'm sure if it was allowed a second season, it could have been up there with some of the classic Nicktoons and maybe be better remembered. But as is, I think it's worth a half-hour of your time. I really enjoyed watching it again and if you can find it on YouTube, give it a go.
